Mrs. Beth Rose – First Grade Guide to Learning

Mrs. Beth Rose – First Grade Guide to Learning

Syllabus: (This is a look at what we will cover in a normal day.)

  • English Language Arts (Reading, Spelling, and Grammar)
  • Small Group Reading time at each individual’s level
  • Whole Group time – This will encompass the basal skills for Reading (phonics, vocabulary, reading and comprehension), Spelling, and Grammar.
  • Writing (paragraphs and short stories)
  • Math  –  sometimes in whole group and sometimes in small group
  • Social Studies
  • Science
  • Coding (writing code for computer programing)

*Once every six day cycle students will also have Art, Library, Music, and Phys. Ed. These classes will be taught by qualified instructors of each subject.

Who, What, When:

English Language Arts:

During class time I will be introducing, practicing, and assessing skills in the following areas:

Phonics – what letters make the sounds we use to read.

Spelling – this goes hand in hand with phonics at this age. The students will be learning to spell words using the phonics skill of the week.

Vocabulary – students will need to be able to read the words on sight, and demonstrate knowledge of word meaning by using the words correctly in sentences.

Reading and Comprehension – This is using the vocabulary words and the phonics skills that have been learned. The students will demonstrate knowledge of those skills by reading fluently and then being able to answer higher order questions about what has been read.

At home:

Phonics/Spelling:

  1. I will be sending spelling homework home each night Monday through Wednesday. This is not a long assignment but is meant to practice the skills and words to be ready for the test on Thursday.
  2. Sometimes (not usually more than once a week) I will also send home a brief phonics page.

Reading/Comprehension:

  1. Students will have a paragraph, story, or short book to read on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evening. This is to practice the skills and vocabulary and to prepare for Friday’s test.

Vocabulary:

Students should practice reading the Vocabulary Sight Words EVERY evening. When I give the vocab list test the students should be able to read the words on sight without sounding out or taking (much of) a pause.

Math:

During class time I will be introducing, practicing, and assessing skills in addition, subtraction, measurement (which includes time), and 2 and 3 dimensional geometry shapes.

At home:

There may be homework on any given evening Monday through Thursday.

Social Studies:

During class time I will be introducing, practicing, and assessing skills in Social Studies.

At home:

  1. Occasionally your child will have a project assigned to be completed at home. This will be for a grade.
  2. At the end of each chapter we will have a test. I will send home a study guide for you and your child to study from.

Science:

During class time I will be introducing, practicing, and assessing skills in Science.

At home:

  1. Occasionally your child will have a project assigned to be completed at home. This will be for a grade.

At the end of each chapter we will have a test. I will send home a study guide for you and your child to study from.

It is extremely important that your student completes the homework assignments each evening so that they retain the skill and are ready to use that skill as we move on in the future.

I try to NEVER give homework on a weekend.

I will however, send home a study guide for English Language Arts so that you can begin to become familiar with the Spelling and Vocab words.

Testing Schedule:

English Language Arts:

  • Thursday: 1. Vocab List Test (reading the words to me from a list)

                   2. Spelling Test (student will write each word and then use the words in sentence dictation)

                   3. Grammar (using the skill of the week)

  • Friday:  Story Test – will assess the following:
  •  Comprehension of the week’s story
  • The week’s phonics skill
  • Vocabulary in sentence form

Math:

Normally, we will have a test on the chapter’s skill at mid-chapter point and end of the chapter.

We will also have a Fact Fluency test each chapter. (Students will have 60 seconds to answer addition or subtraction questions. The students should know the answer without using fingers or counters.)

Social Studies and Science:

We will have a test at the end of each chapter.

180 day ELA Matrix – The following is a guideline, a roadmap so to speak, of approximately when and where we as a district believe we will be in English Language Arts. (You would know this as Reading, Spelling, and Grammar)
