A case of bed bugs was found on the belongings of students within a single family unit. We will be following the bed bug protocol which is based on consultation with the State Health Nurse and other governmental agencies. There is no evidence of an infestation within the buildings. In addition, rooms and lockers of affected students are being deep cleaned each day.
Bed bugs are on the rise in the US and can be encountered in many types of locations (including hotels). Fortunately, they are not known to carry disease. However, they can be an extreme nuisance, and treatments can be very cumbersome and expensive. The key is early recognition and prevention. The bugs primarily travel on clothing and bags. Removal of clutter, keeping items off of floors, and treating with dry heat (such as clothes dryer for 30 min) are the most effective ways to prevent bugs from traveling with you. I have attached several resources below. Additional resources are on the school website: https://shcsd.org/bed-bug-resources/
